Cognitive support

Learning involves cognitive effort. Students need to actively process information, connect new and prior knowledge, and develop strategies for understanding and using what they learn. Research within cognitive science therefore shows that effective teachers deliberately use various teaching strategies to support these cognitive processes and make learning more accessible and durable.

One of the most powerful strategies highlighted in the research is feedback. At the same time, its effect depends entirely on how it is designed and used. Effective feedback is not merely about telling the student whether something is right or wrong, but about supporting the student's understanding and showing the way forward. It needs to be forward-looking and to help the student understand where they are in relation to a goal, how the work has gone so far and what the next steps might be. When feedback makes this direction clear, the student's opportunities to develop increase.

Feedback becomes particularly effective when it focuses on processes and strategies rather than on the individual. This means it is directed at what the student does and how they think, not at who the student is. By receiving feedback on their actions and choices, students get better conditions for changing and improving their learning. This is also central in work on socio-emotional skills, where the focus is on how individuals act in relation to themselves and others.

For feedback to have a real effect, it also needs to be comprehensible and usable. If it is too general or unclear, it risks not leading to any change. That is why feedback needs to be concrete and connected to situations the student recognises. A decisive factor is also that feedback must be followed by time for reflection and processing. Learning does not happen in the very moment feedback is given, but when the student is given the chance to think about it and put it into practice in their continued work. Here both individual reflection and shared reflection play an important role, where students get to formulate their thoughts, explain in their own words and discuss with others. Effective teachers also check students' understanding actively, for example by asking them to summarise, restate instructions or take a position on different statements.

Another central strategy is about supporting working memory and students' processing of information. Because working memory has a limited capacity, teaching needs to be structured so that students are not overloaded. This can be done through repetition, by connecting new knowledge to prior learning and by breaking material into smaller parts. For example, a lesson may benefit from beginning with a short review of earlier content, such as concepts, methods or walkthroughs. Research shows that such recurring moments of review help make knowledge more automatic and therefore easier to use.

When new content is introduced, it is also important to present it in small steps. Effective teachers avoid giving too much information at once and instead let students get the chance to practise after each part. A common approach is for the teacher first to demonstrate a step, then for students to try it themselves, and only when understanding is sufficient do you move on. That way the risk of students feeling overwhelmed and losing focus is reduced.

Furthermore, teaching needs to support students' ability to put knowledge into context and generalise it to new situations. This is about not treating knowledge as isolated units, but actively building bridges between different concepts and experiences. An important method in this work is for the teacher to model their thinking by showing how to solve tasks step by step while thinking aloud. That way students gain insight into the cognitive strategies behind sound reasoning, instead of having to guess their way forward.

Gradually building students' independence is also central. This can happen by the teacher first showing how a task should be done, then carrying out the task together with the class, and finally letting students work independently. This step-by-step transition strengthens students' belief in their own ability and gives them the tools to manage tasks on their own.

Finally, questions are an important part of teaching for stimulating thinking and understanding. By asking many and varied questions, the teacher can activate students' thinking and make their understanding visible. This might involve letting students discuss answers with one another, write down their thoughts or explain aloud how they reason. That way learning becomes active and students get the chance to process knowledge at a deeper level.

Taken together, cognitive science research shows that effective teaching relies on the teacher deliberately supporting students' cognitive processes through structured instruction, clear and forward-looking feedback, active thinking and opportunities for reflection. When these strategies are used systematically, better conditions are created for durable and meaningful learning.
